A veteran film reporter for Variety, Dave McNary, died in Pasadena at the age of 69.

According to his wife Sharon McNary, he had suffered a stroke and had been hospitalized since December 19.

McNary started on a 40-year career in journalism after graduating with a degree in history from UCLA. He worked for UPI, the Los Angeles Daily News, and Pasadena Star-News, before joining Variety, covering the entertainment industry.

He also hosted a Sunday stand-up comedy showcase at the Ice House in Pasadena for three decades. It was where he booked comics who have gone on to careers in the industry.

He had covered the film industry, as well as the labor beat in Variety for more than 20 years.

“Dave leaves a lasting legacy. He has written about the industry and labor relations for a generation and while we loved to argue with him, we considered him a part of the family,” David White, national executive director of SAG-AFTRA, told Variety.
