ACHEH - A gay couple flogged in public in the province of Aceh in Indonesia today, officials said law.
Both men were flogged nearly 80 times each for a kind of sex is prohibited in Aceh following Islamic law.
The couple, who did not reveal their identities, cried out in pain and begged for the whipping to be stopped while the shariah officers whipped the backs of their bodies with rattan sticks.
The sentence was suspended for a while and the two men in their 20s were allowed to drink water. The whipping was continued after that.
The mother of one of the men fainted as soon as she saw her son being whipped.
"The enforcement of Islamic sharia punishment is final, no matter who, and even tourists should respect the norms of the local community," said public order officer Heru Triwijanarko.
The couple was arrested in November last year in a rented house after a landlord found them half-naked in a room.
