MYANMAR - Myanmar National Party for Democracy (NLD) leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been arrested, a party spokesman said.
The arrests took place amid tensions between the civilian government and the military, raising fears of a coup.
In last November's election, the NLD won enough seats to form a government but the military said the vote was invalid.
BBC Southeast Asian journalist Jonathan Head says there are troops on the streets of the capital, Naypyitaw, and the main city, Yangon.
Telephone and internet lines in Naypyitaw have been cut off, reports BBC Burma.
Soldiers also visited the chief minister's house in several provinces and took him away, family members said.
On Saturday, Myanmar's armed forces promised to abide by the constitution as fears mounted that they were preparing for a coup.
