Becky Hammon became the first woman to direct an NBA team as a head coach during the regular season. She took over for San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich when he was ejected during a game on Wednesday.
“Obviously it’s a big deal. It’s a substantial moment. I’ve been part of this organization,” said Hammon to reporters.
She stepped in with 3:56 left in the second quarter in the Spurs’ game against the Los Angeles. The Lakers went on to win the game 121-107.
“I really not had time to reflect. I haven’t looked at my phone, so I have no idea what’s going on outside of AT&T Center tonight, “she said.
Hammon has been in San Antonio and part of the Spurs and sports organization with the Stars and everything for 13 years. A six-time WNBA All-Star in her 16-year playing career, she was the first full-time female assistant coach in NBA history when hired by the Spurs in 2014.
Previously she has served as the Spurs’ head coach during Summer League, which is held during the offseason.
“Obviously, I think very much of her abilities having hired her. That all began when I saw her play,” Popovich said.
He also said that Hammon got all of the tools necessary to be a heck of a coach in their league.
